PRM technical specification for Angel Trains

Vehicle Survey, production of a technical specification and mass assessment for Class 153

Background

All passenger rolling stock must be accessible to the mobility impaired by the 1st January 2020 (PRM TSI).

Angel Trains carried out feasibility studies into the modifications required to their Class 153 units, to make them compliant with the accessibility requirements set by the Department for Transport. They now required a technical specification for these units, including options to remove the existing toilet cubicle and install additional passenger seating or lock it out of use. 

DB ESG has undertaken a number of accessibility compliance surveys on a wide range of rolling stock. They were therefore ideally suited to conduct a compliance survey of the Class 153 units and to then produce a technical specification document, detailing the modifications necessary to allow the vehicles to remain in passenger service.

Work undertaken

  • Class 153 vehicle survey to establish the modifications necessary to achieve compliance with the ‘targeted requirements’. Survey included an assessment into the implications of removing the toilet cubicle and any equipment displaced as a consequence.
  • Production of a technical specification that detailed the modifications required.
  • Class 153 unit mass assessment – a technical report detailing the change in vehicle mass due to the PRM TSI modifications. The tare assessment was based on the mass of materials removed and added. The report also considered the change in seating and standing capacity, together with the change in material mass for the crush condition assessment. Finally, the effects on the vehicle dynamics and gauging performance was calculated.
